Liu Xiangyang, also known as the “Farmer Photographers”, is a Chinese documentary photographer and independent filmmaker. He is most famous for his photography and short film of the rural life in China. Born in a rural family in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, Liu began photographing at just 10 years old, using a camera given to him by his father. After dropping out of college in 2002, he became a full-time photographer and began to travel around Southwest China, documenting the life of rural villagers and other marginalized people. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and magazines such as National Geographic. In 2009, Lily Films produced the documentary “The Farmer Photographer”, which follows Liu’s journey to capture the life of rural people. In 2016, the Beijing-based Ang Lee Fund for Excellence in Documentary Filmmaking awarded him US$10,000 for his short film research project about Sichuan villages.
