In response, the Chinese Association of Senior Citizens (CASC) has proposed to organize committees in every county to provide support to the senior citizens living in the area. According to the statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics, in the year 2017, China’s elderly population for the first time exceeded 241 million, accounting for 17.3% of the country’s total population. The aging population has made the issue of elderly care more pressing and urgent.

The mission of the CASC is to promote the development of elderly care services and policies in China. Established in 1985, the association has long been involved in the sustainable development of elderly care in the country. It is committed to building an inclusive, caring, diverse and tolerant social environment for the elderly. Along with providing physical and mental health services, it also focuses on maximizing the elderly’s quality of life.

The association is actively reaching out to the younger generation in promoting understanding of elderly care issues. It is encouraging young people to establish volunteer teams to assist their grandparents, elderly neighbors, and families, as well as to help spread knowledge of elderly care. These initiatives will better equip young people with the skills to take care of the elderly and enable them to be proactive in promoting elderly care.

Young people’s participation and involvement in elderly care has recently been warmly welcomed and encouraged by the CASC. Given the huge elderly care needs in China and the fact that the younger generations are more likely to understand the needs of the elderly, the CASC is hoping to utilize their advantages and work together with the younger generations to provide better elderly care in the country.
